Red Island Beach in Banyuwangi, East Java, is a popular surfing spot thanks to its spectacular waves. It is also a place of natural beauty.
The setting sun at Red Island Beach is reflected by the water and stretches out with a warm glow. It tinges the sand and a small hill just off the coast on this balmy afternoon.
“That is why it’s called Red Island Beach,” says Rakih, a local surf instructor and fisherman.
Located in Sumber Agung village in Pesanggaran district, the beach has golden sands stretching 3 kilometers. Visitors can engage in activities such as surfing and snorkeling.
Two lifeguards are on duty every day and locals like Rakih can provide advice on safe locations at which to surf. They usually offer surfing lessons for beginners and rent out surfboards for Rp 30,000 (US) per day.
Four rental cottages are available, but local residents also offer accommodation at their homes for Rp 100,000 to Rp 150,000 per room per day.
While several stalls along the beach sell snacks and drinks, it is also possible to ask locals to cook authentic local meals, but this would mean buying all the ingredients in the city first.
Free Wi-Fi is also available, thanks to the local administration’s effort to provide more facilities for tourists.
The best waves for surfing are said to occur from May to July. In fact, an international surfing competition is slated to be held at Red Island Beach in May.
In front of the camps breaks a perfect beach break; long right and left-handers peel on a white- sand bottom. The wave is a perfect A-frame from 1 to 5 foot, with nice sections for turns and airs. When the swell gets bigger, the break turns into a long left, great for turns. Not only is there a perfect peak right in front of the camp, down the bay there are countless other peaks to choose from, generally a couple of feet bigger then the A-frame at the camp. The waves are ideally situated as the trade winds blow offshore all day and the bay is open to all swells.
Red Island consists of a variety of waves:
- Rivermouth left-right peak- This super consistent break offers a super fun rippable left and right perfect for all levels of surfers.
- Down the beach- a whole empty white sand beach with numerous left and right beach-breaks that only you and your friends will be surfing, as there are NO crowds here!
- Secret Right- We have a very secret rivermouth right near by, its needs a big swell and favourable winds but when it does breaks it resembles the ‘Superbank’ in Australia.
- G-LAND – It’s also close to the AMAZING waves of G-Land, so if you feel like testing your ability and courage on the shallow reefs you can go into some G-land Barrels. We only reccommend G-land to intermediate/Advanced surfers.
The break is suitable for all levels of surfers. Beginners can practice without crowds and without any fear of hitting a reef bottom. Advanced surfers will enjoy a perfect wall and barrels.
